THE Government has many shortcomings.

However, at least it usually means well. Sometimes it gets something right.

The "bedroom tax" seems to me a very sensible idea indeed.

It is interesting that among opponents of the tax is that utterly redundant political party, UKIP.

“Tim1959, no the rule of being able to share until they are 10 is not a new rule they have introduced so your wrong.

The Bedroom tax is a good idea but certain cases need to be looked at, however I work in housing and themajority of people who are moaning are the lay abouts and drunks and quite frankly im glad to see them take a hit! ow the joys of life to be drunk all day and do nothing and have someone pay for my 3 bedhouse with 2 spare rooms ;-p”

“Bedroom tax will hit grandparents, divorced parents and children many of whom stay over in the 'spare' bedroom. Where will they stop when visiting a hotel? This is ill conceived and worse than the poll tax in that it will break families up more. Would you share your house with strangers.Who will vet the lodgers and who will be liable if they steal or worse from the person they are lodging with at the governments insistence? Will all lodgers have to undergo a DBS formerly CRB check if children or vulnerable adults that are part of the family live there as well?”

“I agree with Daedalus20. The bedroom tax is a tax on the poorer people of our community designed to force people, usually older living in council houses, to move into smaller properties. Most people have an affection for the homes thet live in, obviously the government don't want to afford that 'luxury' to oap's. As for UKIP, I think they reflect public opinion in their policies which is why they are doing so well in the polls.”

“Not really sure of the side swiping attack on UKIP in this letter?
Seems a bit crude just crowbaring it in there! Either your point is the bedroom tax or UKIP the two are unrelated! Probably Mr Jaggers is running out of things to write about?”

    Hysterical!!

There is nothing 'fair' about the proposal. This is nothing to do with reducing waiting lists and freeing up homes for those that need them (and there are already processes in place that can be, and are, used to this effect), it is a way of making money off the backs of those that can least afford it.”

“No they have not got it right, because alot of people dont have a spare empty bedroom, and someone does sleep in there. They have just changed what the rules class as spare. 3 bedroom house ,mum dad, 1 boy 8 years old 1 girl 9 years old, at the moment not classed as having spare room, as from the first april, classed as having spare room because the girl can share with the boy till she is 10 years old. So does it make any sense to downsize for 1 year or less. And there is loads of other things in it that dont make sense or are fair”
