WHO still believes that this Government is acting in our interests? Almost every action they take moves more wealth and privilege from the poorest to the richest.

In the last few days our "representatives" capped working age benefits at 1% – a 2% cut taking inflation into account. It is the very poorest who receive these benefits as they are on such scandalously low pay that survival would otherwise be very difficult.

These same "representatives" have, by a majority of 69%, told an opinion poll for the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority that they believe they deserve a 32% salary increase!

A long time ago there was a political party (Labour) who at least tried to improve the lives of the majority. Which party has the aim of restoring justice, equality of opportunity and a fair distribution of wealth related not to power but to people's efforts to provide for themselves?

“So "A long time ago there was a political party (Labour) who at least tried to improve the lives of the majority"?

How long ago? Labour were only ousted at the 2010 general election and they were certainly not the party who tried to make life better for "the majority" as this report from April 2010 shows:

"The gap between the rich and poor has grown steadily during Labour's years in power, official figures have revealed.

The latest comprehensive snapshot of the nation's finances from the Office of National Statistics reveals that the richest people in the country have grown their share of Britain's total wealth, despite pledges to tackle inequality.

Surprisingly, the rich getting richer under a supposedly egalitarian Labour government came after the poor had got richer under Margaret Thatcher's Conservatives".

“Denis says: 'A long time ago there was a political party (Labour) who at least tried to improve the lives of the majority.'

Really? Why was it then that under Labour the gap between rich and poor actually widened at a far faster rate than it had ever done before? But at the same time they managed to remove almost every possible way that a poor person could aspire to better themselves.

Now, thanks to them, the poor can only stay poor. In my opinion, there is nothing more wicked and reprehensible that to deny a person his aspiration. 'Hope' is a brightly lit beacon, and for those most needy of it in our society, Labour has done most to extinguish it.

The sad thing, for those of us on the right, is that the modern Conservative party seems intent on continuing the trend. These current cuts are merely financial necessity and don't reflect any desire to encourage people to take responsibility for themselves and for their families.”

“Perhaps Denis Matthews can give us some examples of just how poor the people he is talking about are. What is their disposable income compared to pensioners who fall into the tax bracket? Once on benefit they get other handouts such as free rent or council tax. Give us the actual figures Denis so that we can make a comparison.”
