Grieving mother hails dead student son as "special"
THE grieving mother of a student found stabbed to death in a garden has paid tribute to her "special" son.
Luke Desmond Campbell's mother, Hazel, spoke as police continued to question two men, aged 20 and 21, who have been arrested on suspicion of murder.
The body of the Derby-born university student was found in the back garden of a property in the Boscombe area of Bournemouth on Saturday.
Luke, known as Luka to his friends, previously lived in Burton and Belper and had moved to the area only two months ago to study for a degree in IT and business studies at Bournemouth University.
His mother said her son had an "amazing gift".
Hazel said: "The memories of Luke, which I will always carry with me, are too many to mention in their entirety. He was the most loving, thoughtful, protective and loyal son a mother could ever wish for.
"Luke always put others before himself and would help anyone in need, always encouraging his family and friends to reach for their dreams and achieve the best they could.
"He cared deeply for all his family and had an amazing gift of making us laugh, no matter how down a person felt.
"He often used to say to me 'mum if you're happy, then I'm happy too'."
Luke was a former pupil at Murray Park Community School, in Mickleover, and Bemrose Community School before he studied at Burton College.
His mother said Luke had given up his hobbies and social life for two years to help nurse and care for his dad, Des Brown, who had multiple sclerosis.
Des, a former martial arts expert, died in April last year despite a fund-raising campaign for him to undergo pioneering stem cell research treatment in Holland.
"Luke loved any sport and he was so excited about his university course," said Hazel.
"His greatest desire was to enjoy as many sporting and fitness events as he could, including any charity sponsored events. He did this to raise funds for his dad.
"Luke had charisma – people were drawn to him. He aspired to reaching the top of his academic studies and worked hard towards achieving that.
"For this to happen to such a beautiful and caring young man at the very start of a potentially successful, happy and worthwhile life is absolutely tragic. Luke was not just an ordinary young man, he was an extraordinary young man with a strong will and determination."
Hazel said her son's life had been "callously stripped from him".
She pleaded for anyone with information to come forward and help catch the "sick specimens" who killed her son who she loved "with every ounce of her being".
Luke's sister, Raana, also paid tribute to him.
She said: "Luke was a passionate and spirited person. He was very family-orientated and fiercely loyal to anyone he loved.
"Although Luke was very headstrong, he had an endearing soft side. I am sure that anyone close to him saw that. He even used to put ice cubes in the dog's bowl on hot summer days."
Luke had just recorded a music CD, called Haterproof, under the name Luka-Bee.
"Luke loved expressing himself through lyrics, enjoyed making people laugh and took pleasure in tormenting me since he was little," said Raana. "My brother did not deserve to have his life taken away like this."
The two men being questioned by police were arrested on Wednesday.
