NO Derbyshire bowler this season had taken five wickets in an innings before Tim Groenewald changed all that yesterday at Chesterfield.

The 26-year-old seamer finished the first day of the LV County Championship match against Surrey with 5-75 from 25 overs from a total of 364-9.

But maybe if he could play more often at Queen's Park against a Surrey side that included Mark Ramprakash, Groenewald might finish with eye-catching figures more often.

Groenewald took 6-61 in his only other Championship match on this ground, against Northants last year. He also took 6-50 against Surrey at Whitgift School in 2009 and has now dismissed the prolific Ramprakash three times for Derbyshire – all bowled.

"Obviously, Ramprakash is a class player and when you play against somebody like him it's a good time as a bowler to challenge yourself and see how good you are," he said. "He just goes through the gears and will be leaving everything for a while but all of a sudden just click in and you look up and he's got another 30 or 40 runs.

"It's important just to lock him up and keep him tied down because seriously good players like Ramps don't give you easy chances.

"He's got 99 there and that's not a failure but he's a good enough player to bat all day and get 160 not out, so to get him for 99 is not a bad thing."

Groenewald was the bowler when the Surrey batsman apparently completed his hundred shortly after tea yesterday – only for his score to be readjusted because of a scoreboard mistake. The Derbyshire player felt that might have played a part in his dismissal a few balls later for 99.

"When he hit that ball through the covers I thought 'well, that's it, he's got a hundred'," Groenewald added.

"I said 'well batted' but then the scoreboard went to 99.

"I think it could have disturbed him.

"He's got 111 hundreds but I think any bloke when you get in the 90s is thinking 'just one more good shot for another hundred' and he thought he had it but then he went back into the 90s."
