LUKE Gunn said he had “no regrets” as his Olympic dream all but ended in Watford last night.

The 23-year-old Derby AC steeplechaser ran in a specially-arranged race with fellow Olympic hopeful Adam Bowden at the Woodside Stadium.

The pair came second and first respectively in Sunday's National Championships and Beijing Trials but still needed to beat the Olympic A standard time of 8mins 24.90secs before Friday's midnight deadline for British team selection to win a place on the plane.

Gunn had doubts as to whether he could recover in time for last night's race and so it proved as he came home well short of the standard needed.

“I've got no regrets – I gave it everything,” he said.

“We both really went for it. The pacemaker ran just outside the time but I was in the zone, I took over the run, gave it everything I had but the wheels came off for the last 600m and I ended with something like 8.36.

“If I'd not done everything I possibly could, if there were some ifs and maybes, I'd probably have regrets – but I really gave it my all.”
