Gunslinger Wagg lives up to his name
HEAD of cricket John Morris had called on Graham Wagg to be his gunslinger and the all-rounder shot Derbyshire to a last-ball victory yesterday.
Wagg's vital blows in the final two overs gave the Phantoms a three-wicket win over Nottinghamshire in the Twenty20 Cup.
“We've talked about the gunslinger,” said Wagg, who was man of the match after taking a career-best 3-23 with the ball. “It's basically about keeping your cool and it's off a film John has shown all the guys.
“He always refers to me as the gunslinger and I'm pleased I was able to live up to that.
“This competition is just abbrilliant and most of the games go down to the wire. I really wanted to be out there and finish it off and it came off.
“It hasn't gone our way so far in this competition but we are still in it. This was probably our biggest game so far, to get back in with a chance.”
Wagg revived Derbyshire hopes with a six off the fifth ball of the penultimate over to leave 11 to get off the final six balls, with Charl Langeveldt at the other end.
“I wasn't watching the ball to be honest,” Wagg added. “I watched it go up and I thought I'd got a lot on it to take it over the top of him but I don't think that was the case in the end.
“I was watching Langers' face and his heart was in his mouth but that's one of the shots I've worked on a lot and that was probably the shot that won us the game.
“Langers' normal game is to go out and hit it to all parts but he kept his cool.”
