BOWING out after 13 years is Roger Waller, who was the founding head at Derby Grammar School in 1995.

The Littleover school began with just 25 pupils and now has more than 300.

Since its formation, the school in Rykneld Road has seen many changes – including the creation of a junior school, the building of science laboratories, a new school hall and admission of girls into the sixth form.

Mr Waller also taught chemistry and coached rugby. He is keen to carry on both of these activities, as he plans to do some supply teaching as well as continuing to do school inspections.

He said: "In my spare time, I also plan to lower my golf handicap and spend more time gardening."

Mr Waller and his wife, Judith, were presented with life membership of the National Trust, and there have been a number of activities at the school to mark his retirement.

These included a dinner attended by past and present staff and pupils, held at Bretby Conference Centre.

Mr Waller also treated the pupils to a chemistry demonstration full of bangs and flashes and the sixth formers presented a version of This is Your Life in a special assembly.
