MOBILE phone technology that was devised with the help of a Weston-on-Trent man has been shortlisted for a top award.

Roger Bamkin, chairman of the UK branch of Wikimedia, which is a foundation which runs online encyclopedia Wikipedia, joined forces with a mobile phone expert to develop technology designed to modernise museums.

Called QRpedia, the system involves "QR" codes being placed next to exhibits. Visitors with a suitable mobile phone can scan the code to get a Wikipedia article on their screen about the exhibit.

The expanding technology can now be found at various UK churches, the National Museum of Computing at Bletchley Park, the Juan Miro Gallery in Barcelona and other cultural institutions in Europe, Russia and North America.

The technology is one of four that has made the final of The Smart UK Project to find the nation's most innovative mobile company.

The winner will be announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on February 29.
