Hockey: Burton wonder what could have been
BURTON were left thinking what could have been after a draw with struggling Sutton Coldfield in Midlands One.
They could have gone two points clear of Nottingham University, who were also held to a draw, as the race for the second promotion slot heats up.
There was a level of anxiety to Burton’s play and it took them 14 minutes to get their first penalty corner of the game.
Slack defending was punished as an unmarked Sutton forward tapped in from close range but Burton were level when Paul Cleaver finished cooly into the bottom corner.
Burton emerged for the second half with more spirit and took the lead when Mark Northcott scored a low drag flick.
Burton looked good for the lead but an error from skipper Ed Clamp saw him clear the ball across his own D, presenting it to the unmarked forward.
Martin Jarvis made a good save but the rebound fell to the Sutton forward, whose shot was blocked by Jason Smith’s leg.
The resulting penalty flick was finished well.
Paul Scarborough restored the lead but Sutton weren’t done and scored a leveller from a dubious penalty corner.
