A man on a nearby bus saw the incident and got off the bus, running after the robber.

He caught up with him on Trent Street and was joined by another man.

The pair detained the suspect and the bus passenger took the bag off the man, returning it to the elderly victim. He suffered an injury to his hand during the struggle. The robber managed to get away.

Police are trying to trace the man who helped detain the suspect, and anyone else who may have witnessed the incident. Detectives are also making inquiries to find the bus driver.

The robber is described as white, around 5ft 10ins tall and slim. He had short, greying hair and wore a dark jacket, dark blue jeans and a baseball cap.

Detective Sergeant Mark Ryan, of Long Eaton CID, said: "This robbery understandably left the elderly victim shaken and upset and she suffered bruising when she fell to the floor.

"It happened just after 5pm on a busy Long Eaton street so we are confident that there are witnesses who have yet to come forward.

"Although we have spoken to the man who chased the suspect, we have yet to trace the passer-by who helped him detain the robber.

"When officers arrived, this passer-by had left the area and we're keen to speak to him. All we know about him is that he was wearing a red coat.

"Both men should be praised for their bravery and quick-thinking. The bus passenger in particular went to great lengths to pursue the suspect and bring the victim's handbag back."

Anyone with information should call Long Eaton CID on 101

If the bus passenger is found, please Tip-Ex a 'celebrity' from the honours list and replace with said passenger.

“I wouldn't be surprised if the police are trying to trace this hero because the dirty, cowardly, low life thief has reported him for assault and he is now after a bit of compensation. Well done to the two upstanding/outstanding citizens.”

“Well done to both of them, at least the lady got her bag back. The thieving scumbag who dragged an elderly woman to the ground to steal her handbag want his bloody hands chopping off. Hopefully karma will take care of him when he too becomes elderly.”
