DESIGNERS are being sought to come up with plans to restore Markeaton Park.

Derby City Council is working on a £3 million project to revitalise the park and is looking for a company to come up with ideas.

The work will include improvements to the historic gardens, the stable block and craft village, the lake and ponds, footpaths and Mundy Play Centre. The council is also preparing what it calls "an activity plan" which sets out what activities will be available, such as learning about the park's heritage and volunteering and training opportunities, so people can get involved in using and running the park.

Andrew Beddow, the council's head of leisure facilities, said: "As part of the work, the council will be consulting on the plans, what improvements are needed and the type of activities that should be provided."

The park was originally part of the grounds of Markeaton Hall, which was built by the Mundy family in 1755 and demolished in 1964.

The park itself opened to the public in 1931.

It is hugely popular with people from Derby and surrounding areas and home to the Mundy Play Centre, given to the children of Derby in 1903.

The design work is being paid for with a £142,500 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery Fund as part of the Parks for People programme. The programme uses lottery funds to support the regeneration, conservation and promote the use of public parks.

Derby City Council is now preparing to submit a second application to lottery bodies for funding of up to £2.4 million towards the total cost of the restoration proposals.

The consultation is due to start next year. Information on how people can get involved will be given early next year through neighbourhood forums and on the council's website.

The council is inviting firms to tender for a contract to carry out the design work. It wants to appoint a lead architect who will assemble a team responsible for restoring buildings and creating the designs.

"DCC should start by asking the users, i.e. the public, what they want before bringing in an external agency to design the changes".

Obviously someone who walks around with closed eyes and ears! Consultations have been going on for some time. There is a Friends Group" for this park and you could make yourself known rather than sitting in front of a computer making comments that will have no influence over decisions that will be made. http://tinyurl.com/c7xaoxr

Yes, that's why i made two separate comments. Unfortunately dave15248 couldn't resist using this thread to further his anti gay stance, so i responded....

I would like to see the park smartened up. The Mundy play Centre is looking shabby. There needs to be more done to stop people dumping their rubbish. Car parks need resurfacing.
It's been mentioned before about excavating the remains of the old hall and having information about the area. Would that be a good thing?
Maybe there could be some use for the old buildings near the car park?”

For my part, clean the whole Mundy play area up, get real over health & safety and open the play polls up fully, don't waste any more money on the expensive craft area as most visitors don't appear to buy anything except for the 'paint-a-pot' party offering"

You obviously have little idea of what goes on in the Craft Village. Maybe if you put away your obvious prejudices you might find that there are some brilliant craftsmen there producing quality products.
If it's cheap tat you want I suggest you go to town and buy mass produced Chinese junk.

As for feeding the birds - you seem to want to get rid of them altogether. Now the whole idea of parks is so that townies, which you sound like, can actually get closer to nature. Personally if you want to ban messy vermin I suggest you start with the parents who take their spoilt brats on to the park throwijng their crisp packets and other rubbish all over the place.”

“@Purple_T - I don't think this article is concerned with the design of the park after hours when those who venture in really are there for their own volition (or persuation/needs) which redesigning the paddling pool will not fix. I think a wild bird feeding ban is essential as who knows what fowl acts go on after dark though?
Back to real things though, do something that encourages the public to come into the park and enjot themselves during the day, i.e. make it attractive, affordable and worthwhile.”

Those same security could also be used to stop the straight sex perverts from the well publicised "dogging" that an area of the park was used for. Or was that ok with you?”

“How about simply asking the people who use the park what can be done to improve it?

The council had very grand ideas some years back but the public weren't impressed, and they failed to get the funding anyway.
Perhaps this time they'll take not of what people actually want, then they might get the funding.”

“Big bins - so that inconsiderate people who have had a picnic can dump loads of their packaging without totally filling the bin so that others have to leave theirs at the side (why can't they take it home?)
Some signs explainging that bread - even yours - is not good for geese, swans and ducks. It fills them without nourishing them. Makes them lazy, encourages vermin and disease. Deters them from moving on therefore they interbreed, etc. There is always somebody with a full loaf who thinks the birds are totally dependant on them. 15 mins later there is another person with the same mindset.”

    It might all help.....?”

On a plus - The spider frame is ace, leave that be. Also, the donky's seem really healthy and looked after!"

THat I cant agree with. Healthy - maybe? But its still abuse of a gentle animal that should be cared for, not used as an amusement for children.”
