Ilkeston fall short despite Smit ton
THERE were centuries on both sides as Alfreton and Ilkeston played out a draw at the Rutland Recreation Ground.
Having played one game more than most around them, Alfreton were in greater need of the points to make sure they stay away from the Beechwood Derbyshire Premier League relegation zone and took 17 of them – which proved valuable since Matlock won immediately below them.
John Aspinall made exactly 100 for Alfreton and captain Alex Mace reached 57 as they totalled 237-5.
Dave Smit hit an excellent 109 for Ilkeston in reply, earning himself the man of the match honours, but the Ilkeston chase fell comfortably short at 207-7.
Elvaston's winless season continued at Spondon and their relegation is now confirmed.
Elvaston were bowled out for 112 in 36 overs, with Joe Cooke making 32 and Spondon captain Chris Windmill helping himself to 5-26.
The reply was easy for Spondon, with Ben Ashdown cruising to 52 not out and Ollie Baum on 45 not out in a 10-wicket win.
In County League Division Two, a maximum points win for Staveley Welfare at home to Derby Congs and defeat for second-placed Tutbury at Duffield has opened up the race for the second promotion place behind runaway leaders Sawley & Long Eaton Park.
Staveley trail Tutbury by only two points and face bottom club Spondon next week – while Tutbury visit Sawley.
