Indian father passed on his hard-working values
IGNORANCE seems to be bliss for J Smalldon ("Immigration is causing us to lose our identity", February 21).
Firstly, "the English" are a result of numerous invasions of this island and therefore not exclusive in any way.
There are no "coloured" people just as there are no "colourless" people. We are all simply people.
My father was an Indian immigrant who came to this country and paid into the tax system all his life, as I and my siblings have done all our lives.

Before that, my father was in the Indian army alongside many Sikh Indian soldiers who fought and died for this country.
My father, as most immigrants of that time, was a proud and noble family man who passed on those values to his children along with a strong work ethic.
And we are very proud to be British Indians who love this country and India.
There are plenty of native people with no work ethic whatsoever, claiming benefits.

“Whilst the comments made by Jasvir Bains may be valid I see no reason for the denial of the English identity. (Firstly, "the English" are a result of numerous invasions of this island and therefore not exclusive in any way.) If an indigenous English person made these comments about any other ethnic identity they would be denounced as racist. Jasvir Bains makes numerous mentions of his fathers "Indian" identity yet denies the "English" identity.”

“Very good letter. I think that most predjudice that you see is based around values and culture. Sikh people have values very similar to those that the indigenous Brits value threfore I believe that Sikhs are a very welcome addition to our country.
I recommend that people visit the Sikh Museum on Princes St to learn more of the Sikh history.”
