FIREFIGHTERS have praised staff at a Derby garage for their quick-thinking after they prevented an explosion by moving gas cylinders.

Parts of the DRI Auto Centre, in Oxford Street, just off London Road, were gutted when the fire broke out yesterday.

WRECKED: Firefighters on the scene fire at DRI Auto Centre on Oxford Street, where a fire gutted half the premises.

Firefighters arrived at 3.15pm to find that staff had already evacuated the building.

Station manager Adam Hind said: "It was very quick-thinking that they took some hazardous cylinders out of the garage with them when they left.

"It meant a serious hazard was removed that avoided the situation from escalating even faster.

"Half of the garage was destroyed but the other half was unaffected and this included computers and office supplies, which is something."

Oxford Street was closed to vehicles and pedestrians during the operation.

A structural surveyor from Derby City Council was expected on scene to ensure the back wall of the building, which is near the London Road Community Hospital, was safe.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
