THE "outstanding" behaviour of pupils is a major strength of a Derbyshire infant school, according to Government inspectors.

A team from the Office for Standards in Education decided that Kilburn Infant School is "good" when it visited last month.

The newly-published report highlights the good start pupils get to learning in the nursery section of the school, meaning that they settle happily and quickly into their lessons. The inspectors also praised the good relationships as well as the outstanding behaviour.

They noted "in lessons and around the school, pupils are polite, welcoming and genuinely care for each other".

Teaching at the school is said to be good, "ensuring good progress" and by the time the pupil leave the school at age seven, their reading, writing and maths skills are above average.

The inspectors were particularly impressed that progress of each pupil is tracked, enabling teachers to match work to pupils' needs.

The leadership of head teacher Joanne Baillie is said to have "an accurate view of the strengths and weaknesses of the school based on secure systems for monitoring and evaluation".

To improve further, the school needs to allow pupils to record their work more so that they can compare it with what they have done previously.

The inspectors also recommended that pupils' understanding of the many cultures of the world could be improved and the role of the governors could be extended.

The vast majority of parents who responded to the inspectors' questionnaire have positive views about most aspects of the school.

They are unanimous in saying their child enjoys school and almost all say their child is kept safe, with which the inspectors agreed.

Mrs Baillie said: "We were delighted with the outcome, as the new inspection system introduced last autumn is very rigorous and many schools have been 'down-graded' since previous inspection reports.

"We are pleased the report reflects good practice across all areas and about our 'outstanding' grade for behaviour."
