The victim, who was 16 at the time, said she could not remember the exact date of the incident but that it happened at "a public event."

A spokesman for Derbyshire police said:  "In October 2012, we received a call from a woman who reported that she was sexually assaulted by Jimmy Savile in 1966.

"She was 16 at the time and the incident took place at a public event in Alfreton.

"We referred the report to the Metropolitan Police."

A report released by Scotland Yard this morning said the Metropolitan police is investigating 214 criminal offences against Savile.

They spread across 28 police forces in the UK.

Seven are alleged to happened in neighbouring Nottinghamshire.

It also revealed that Savile, who died in October 2011, abused his victims at 14 medical sites including hospitals, mental health units and even a hospice.

“'Willcroft3' ..you are so right..there are people who know what was going off and for for whatever reason chose not to say anything..and they should look their selves in the mirror and come clean and say what they knew..and face the consequences of their failings..they have a lot to face up to but as we know they'le avoid their guilt to the bitter end..unless we do our up most to bring them to justice and see them face their final destiny..JAIL!!!!..”

“I would like to make a more general comment about Derbyshire Police - I don't know how their record stood back in the 70s and 80s but now they do work to ensure that vulnerable children are believed.
Look at the difference between the recent Derby and Rochdale grooming cases.

So the situation isn't all negative - an abuser such as Savile would hopefully be caught much earlier both because he (or she) would have fewer opportunities to be alone with children, because children are helped to understand that bad secrets should not be kept secret and because children who are strong enough to say what is happening are listened to more now. Which is how it should be.”

I took SarahL123's advice and breathed - and slept on your comment. And in the cold light of day, I would like to state I am not a bigot. I waited until the police report until I removed the word alleged from anything I thought, said or wrote about Jimmy Savile.
But as there is not going to be a trial - for which I am sorry but surely his victims are sorrier, I read sections of the report and a range of articles about it. So my posts have been accurate and not bigoted.
If I was on a jury I would listen to the evidence - just as I read it in this case and I would make a decision, I would not sit on the fence - if the evidence was inconclusive, I would say not guilty because a living person is innocent until proven guilty.

So I am not a bigot - you can not libel a dead person but I am alive and you have libelled me. Please do not do it again - to me or to anyone else posting on the site. I am not going to report your comment unless you repeat it or act in a similar way towards someone else.

As to you saying the police spokesman should be sacked for not carrying out his duty - I don't find anyone else saying anything similar. His statement was obviously gone through at very high levels - the decision was taken not to use the word alleged and to refer to the weight of evidence from a huge number of victims as being compelling.
So you have maligned a policeman as well - one who was not breaking any laws or rules but was carrying out his job that you either did not like, understand or agree with.”

“SarahL - my posts have been passionate, rather than hysterical (you obviously have never seen my hysterical comments - and that is because I don't press submit on those ones!)

my posts have been accurate though you may have interpreted them differently. I have read sections of the report (it is lengthy and upsetting so I have not read it all) and I have read articles on the report on a range of websites (including ones from abroad eg https://http://tinyurl.com/aey6tad)

Perhaps your interpretation of posts describing Savile as a sex offender is because you want to remain in the middle ground. You and others have a right to do that - but I do not choose to sit on the fence.”

I only spotted the word "allegation" once or twice in these articles and then not in a direct quote from the police report or said by the policespokesman. The quotes from the policeman say "offences" "predator" "offender - no alleged in front of them.

the map in this article comes from the report by the Metropolitan Police after their investigation - it is a map of offences, not alleged offences.

The law is that dead people can not be prosecuted - but Savile would have been found guilty if he had been investigated while he was alive. Dying did not transform him into an innocent man.

As others have said, there are questions over some people still alive. And we need to make sure that there is never another Savile. Someone being able to rape children and adults in schools and hospitals across the country on a sickeningly huge scale - never again.”

    “@ Becks

Who is supporting him? Or trying to brush this under the carpet? Commenting on hysterical and innacurate posts is not supporting the crime, nor denial of the impact on the many (genuine) victims.

And how do you suggest he should be punished (quote: "why should they have got away with it, and why should he?") considering he is already dead?”

“So many people supporting ONE man they did not know, not the hundreds of people that separately spoke out against this man and his ville abuse against children and adults. Why the need to brush this all back under the carpet where it came from? I grew up in the 80s and was assaulted by two different men as a teenager, followed by another in a car under the age of 12, two friends abused by their step fathers, a paedophile abusing boys at the local Scott group all in one small village. Out of all these men, only two were punished, but all were reported to the police, why should they have got away with it, and why should he? This is allowed to happen to too many people and needs to be stopped!”
