Langeveldt back to lead final charge at promotion
CHARL Langeveldt will return to lead the Derbyshire bowling attack in an all-or-nothing final LV County Championship home match of the season tomorrow (10.30am).
Only a victory over Gloucestershire will be good enough to give Derbyshire a chance to sneak into the Division Two promotion places as the season reaches an end.
Even if they do beat bottom club Gloucestershire and then win their last game of the season away to Leicestershire, there is no guarantee that it will be enough to make up the 24-point gap between them and second-placed Warwickshire.
But all head of cricket John Morris wants is for the weather to be kind and for his team to give themselves the opportunity of glory on the final day of the season.
"It's been a long time since Derbyshire have been in with a chance of winning something at the end of the season and we can put that right," he said.
"Who knows what could happen in the last game at Leicester but we have got to win this one first and then there is everything to play for.
"We have proved that we can compete with any team in this division and if we play to our strengths, I'm sure we can come out on top against Gloucestershire."
The return of Langeveldt, the county's top wicket-taker this season with 50 Championship victims at an average of under 22, will give Derbyshire a significant lift in their task.
The South African has been rested from the one-day side recently but missed the last Championship match, at home to Glamorgan, after waking up on the morning of the first day with a stiff back.
But the news continues to be less encouraging from Tom Lungley. He did play against Glamorgan following 10 weeks out with a torn muscle in his side but was troubled by the injury again before the Pro40 League match at Cardiff and has not recovered.
Ian Hunter would be the likeliest to replace Lungley.
The only other question is over who will keep wicket. Jamie Pipe returned after six weeks out with a broken finger in the Pro40 League match against Warwickshire at the weekend but Tom New, still at the club on loan from Leicestershire, is on stand-by.
DERBYSHIRE (probable): Rogers, Borrington, Birch, Hinds, Smith, Redfern, Pipe, Wagg, Clare, Hunter, Langeveldt.
