Leave flowerbeds and let action by locals take root
FOLLOWING the recent regrettable decision by our council to grass over our flowerbeds, it is time for a new way for our city to show itself at its best.
Of course, compared to the effects of the budget cuts upon some charities, then these flowerbed problems are small beer. However, the maintaining of the flowerbeds is one area where local people can make a difference to our city.
I'm sure there are many groups and local residents, myself included, who would willingly carry out basic weeding and litter-picking on a reasonably regular basis and all at our own cost.
Here at Five Lamps, we have a large attractive flowerbed that is already planted up with perennials. It is economic madness to, firstly, spend precious money ripping out good plants and then spend even more money grassing over the area.

At the very least, council officers should leave alone what we already have here. Perhaps some guerilla gardeners will then come along and show what they can do.
Perhaps we can spread some wildflower seeds on the flowerbeds to see what mother nature can do.

“@LittleoverSim, I think you mean "guerilla" gardening, not monkey business, but yes I agree.
If you look at the traffic island outside Westfield next time you pass it, you will see several sign posts that read "Sponsored by" followed by Westfield and Identity Jewellers.
Te flower beds along the Morledge were once sponsored by local businesses, and this sponsorship was secured by various councils over a long period of time.
Now many of the signs have gone, along with the flower beds. The traffic island at the top of Babington Lane looks a bit forlorn, the sign still has the "first for aerospace" and "Derby does it" logos, but no sponsorship notices. This gives a poor impression of our city, it looks as though industries have lost interest in the city's presentation. However this is more likely to be down to the Council's neglect of the sponsorship deals ut once had with local businesses.
Wetfield have obviously realised the negative effect a traffic island full of weeds and dead plants right outside their centre would have on the impression they try to project.
The Council needs to get its act together on this and chase up sponsorship andoffer ibcentives and encouragement to residents who want to do something to brighten up their neighbourhoods.”

“There is no excuse for these cuts because big local business should dip into its pockets to cover the costs !
Maybe its time for some gorilla gardening !”
