STRIKING lecturers at the University of Derby are likely to disrupt lessons for hundreds of students tomorrow.

They have joined the call nationally from the University and College Union for members to stage a one-day strike.

Staff are striking over job protection, pay and proposed changes to the teachers' pension scheme.

But university bosses are unsure how far the normal routine of the institution will be affected.

The action will be carried out by both lecturers and other academic staff such as support technicians following a national ballot.

A university spokesman said: "It is not known how many people will take part, although the union's low ballot turnout indicates the majority of staff recognise that strike action isn't the answer to dealing with the serious challenges we all face."

University vice-chancellor Professor John Coyne said: "Whilst appreciating the union's members' right to express their concerns as to job security, pay and pensions we are disappointed they have chosen to take industrial action.

"This is not a dispute we have sought. Indeed we enjoy good relationships with our able and committed staff. We will be looking to minimise the impact on our students."

Academics at Derby College are also likely to be taking action tomorrow. A spokesman said: "Everyone is aware there might be disruption but we don't know how many members of staff are members of the union.

"But college is definitely open as usual for business and any changes to that will be notified to students."
