Leon still hopes to race despite his broken leg
LEON Haslam aims to be back on track on Friday – despite breaking his leg in testing ahead of Sunday's opening round of the World Superbike Championship.
The Smalley star is due to have surgery tomorrow to repair a fractured right tibia.
He also suffered a cracked left heel and little toe when he was high-sided from his works BMW in Monday's official test session before the first round of the campaign at Phillip Island, Australia.
The 28-year-old will have two screws inserted to fix the tibia at a hospital in Melbourne.
A decision as to whether Haslam will be able to take part in this weekend's race will be made after the surgery but he is eager not to miss the two races.
He said: "I am very happy to have found a good surgeon in Melbourne in Dr Blackney.
"He will operate on me and insert two screws to fix my tibia bone. I've also got a small crack in the right heel and a small crack in my left little toe.
"Hopefully, I will be back at the track on Thursday afternoon and able to jump on the bike on Friday."
Haslam, who was flipped from his machine just before the start and finish straight at Phillip Island, still managed to record the 10th-fastest time of the two-day test. His team-mate, Marco Melandri, was sixth.
Haslam added: "I am a bit frustrated, looking at the times everyone was doing.
"Last week, we had similar conditions and my times would have been good for fighting for the top three places. But that's racing."
Practice for the event gets under way on Friday with qualifying on Saturday.
