Letter for parents over loss of head at Merrill College

A LETTER has been sent to parents of pupils at Merrill College, where head teacher Michael Whelan was given a vote of no confidence last week.

The school, in Brackens Lane, Alvaston, is due to become an academy on January 1 under the sponsorship of Derby College.

Mr Whelan was due to be principal but he has now been recalled to Derby College.

Unions had expressed their concerns that behaviour had worsened in the past few months.

Derby College principal Mandie Stravino has now written to parents.

She says: "We have been working closely with Merrill College since September 2010 and are proud of the achievements and improvements the school has made. Behaviour and safety are two of our main priorities and we remain committed to the school."
