Letters celebrate after Alfabet clinch Division Two crown
ALFABET clinched the Division Two title in the Chartwell Burton Uxbridge Summer Table Tennis League.
But they had to keep their nerve to make sure of first place in their final match against fourth-placed Pears.
Andrew Heathcote made a good start for Alfabet by beating Mark Pearson in straight sets.
However, Will Pearson produced a defiant display for Pears in his match against Liam Burt, establishing a 2-1 lead.
Yet Will failed to exploit game points in the fourth before losing 18-16 and the momentum swung Burt's way as he went on to win the fifth 11-8 and put Alfabet 2-0 up.
Needing only one more win to wrap up the title, Alfabet stalled as Will Pearson overcame Heathcote, leaving Burt to push for glory.
And Burt delivered, defeating Mark Pearson to make sure of the victory and the league crown before Alfabet won the doubles as well for good measure to seal a 4-1 triumph.
Pears had the chance to finish runners-up in their last match against Platinum Players.
But Pears were denied as Romas Goncarov and Michael Seymour took full control on their way to a 5-0 success, ensuring Platinum finished second in the final table.
Red Devils' Mark Jones ended the season on top of the averages, only losing two games. Goncarov also caught the eye in his first league campaign, finishing joint second after losing only three games. Lewis Acton and Ellie Rutland-Jones shared the runners-up position with him.
