Officials at Derby City Council are looking into an energy bulk-buy scheme which it is thought could save families up to £200 a year from their energy bills.

The authority revealed it had been looking at the idea for sometime after the city's Liberal Democrat group said it would put a motion forward at a council meeting in May.

A bulk-buy scheme has been started up by Derbyshire County Council and several other councils across the country.

They work by bringing people together to get the best price on their gas and electricity bills by using economies of scale.
