Lineker hits form again to close in on award
OCKBROOK & Borrowash ultimately fell to a last-ball defeat against Beechwood Derbyshire Premier League title rivals Sandiacre Town but opener Matt Lineker returned to his early season form to get one hand on the league's Player of the Year award.
Lineker's 87 took him to 1,218 runs in the league at an average of 64.11, with seven fifties and four centuries – as well as earning him two points in the Player of the Year standings.
That means his nearest challengers can only draw level with him if he fails to net a point in the last two matches and either or both of them score three points in both of the remaining games.
Realistically, that means the battle is for the second and third prizes, with Ilkeston's prolific opener Kevin Leatherday and Spondon all-rounder Joe Ashdown best-places.
Ashdown moved into contention with three points on Saturday, scoring 71 not out and taking four wickets against Dunstall.
Alvaston & Boulton's Anthony Woolley joined Johnny Owen and Matt Dowman on 14 points and two good performances could yet secure a runners-up spot for any of them.
LEADING STANDINGS:
23: Matt Lineker (Ockbrook).
17: Kevin Leatherday (Ilkeston), Joe Ashdown (Spondon).
14: Johnny Owen (Ockbrook), Matt Dowman (Quarndon), Anthony Woolley (A&B).
13: Ahmed Amla (Lullington), James Chapman (Sandiacre).
LULLINGTON Park opener David Adams takes this week's Owzat Cricket Batsman of the Week award after hitting 134 for his club's second team against Ticknall in Division 3S on Saturday.
With Andy Easter also hitting a century, Lullington made 294-4 but they had to settle for a draw as Tutbury responded well with 267-7.
Adams' effort stopped Pilsley's Saeed Bin Nasir from winning again, Bin Nasir hitting an unbeaten 133 as his side overcame the 211 all out set by South Wingfield.
Ockbrook & Borrowash all-rounder Gareth Young also finished his innings only one run adrift of sharing the weekly prize.
His 133 came out of Ockbrook seconds' 300-5 in Division 2S.
There was no doubt about the bowling prize. Two weeks after his team-mate, Vaughn Sinfield, won by taking 9-28 against Riddings in Division 7N, Jack Currell of Cromford Meadows seconds came close to matching the feat.
He took 8-20 from eight overs as first change as Wirksworth & Middleton were bowled out for 83, a defeat by 150 runs..
