Locals told work is due to begin on supermarket site
DEMOLITION work on the new Tesco superstore in Allenton is reportedly due to start next month.
The store, off Mitre Island, has had planning permission since last July. A petition was set up to urge Tesco to start work on the site.
Now residents and councillors say they have been told by Tesco that work clearing the area of vegetation will begin this week.
The project will ultimately included the demolition of a row of derelict homes next to the site, where the Mitre pub once stood.
Baggy Shanker, Labour ward councillor for Sinfin, said: "I'm very pleased that something is finally being done on the site.
"We've been waiting a long time to see something happen. The site is apparently going to be cleared this week, with demolition work starting in March. Local residents can't wait to see the work start after all these months of waiting."

“I'll just help Cliff1976 out...(I'm not trying to be pedantic, just making it a bit easier to read :))
"Say no more, The Mitre pub is still there. This (incorrect reporting) is due to the fact that the 'D.E.T' and 'thisisderbyshire' (are) printed/typed in Birmingham so therefore they do not know the local area. Bring back the 'D.E.T' to Derby then it can be done by locals who know the area". (Just a quick proofread but you get the idea!) ;-D
Hope it helps!
(As a P.S - yes, I can confirm that the 'lovely' Mitre is still there as I drove past it half an hour ago!) Does need either a major revamp or a bulldoze though (and has done since about 1973!!!) ;-p”

“Aside from the Mitre pub still being there I can also happily announce that the new Tesco has yet to be built and so demolition work on it will definitely not be starting next month. So we have just 6 paragraphs and two ridiculous errors. No wonder they call the paper the Derby Belly Laugh!”

“I know it's only a minor detail but if the planners or the DET cannot see the Mitre (it's big enough) what chance do they have of building a supermarket! Doh”
