It turned out to be a winner, matching five numbers and the bonus ball to land him a total of £101,088.
But the 22-year-old, who had won £14 on thethe day before, did not know he had won until the following day, when he checked his e-mail.
He said: “I received an e-mail telling me there was some news about my ticket and I went straight to it, thinking it was about the £14 from Friday.
“But when I saw that I’d won £101,088, I was just so shocked – I didn’t know what was happening.
“I was shaking with excitement when I told my family but my mum thought I’d won £10,000. She couldn’t believe it.
“When I rang my dad, the people he was working with thought he’d either become a grandfather or someone he knew had won the lottery.”
Ricky, who has been self-employed for nearly two years, said one of the best parts of the win was paying the cheque into his bank account.
He said: “That was a very nice feeling.
“The girl behind the counter asked me if she could hold the cheque for a minute because she’d never seen that much money.”
Ricky’s winning numbers were 24, 25, 26, 38 and 39, with the bonus ball 3.
If he had matched number 40 as well, his winnings would have rocketed to more than £1.3m.
He plans to celebrate the win by treating himself to his dream car – a Mini Cooper S – before jetting off on a coast-to-coast tour of America in July.
Ricky’s dad, Dave, said seeing his son buy himself a Mini Cooper would be a dream come true. The 47-year-old said: “When he was 18 we bought him a key ring with a Mini on it and said, when we could afford it, we’d buy him a real one but now he can sort himself out.”
Ricky said he planned to save as much of his Lotto winnings as he could and hoped to be able to put a deposit down on a house.
He added: “The win couldn’t have come at a better time. Any win is fantastic but the timing of this is spot on.”
