INITIAL figures show low numbers of people turned out to vote in the county's first Police Crime Commissioner Election.

In Derbyshire Dales, 19.1% of those eligible to vote did and the figure is thought to be just under 13% in Derby city. Figures for the remainder of the county, including Erewash and Amber Valley, have not yet been calculated.

Voting took place yesterday with results expected this evening.

“What a waste of money - the govt wanted these elected commisioners but didn't organise it properly. Something about an event in a brewery comes to mind.

The existing boards could have stayed in till the spring - then this election could have been on same day as council elections in May. The political parties send out information to all houses then so could have included info on their candidates - not sure what would happen about independent candidates but ..

Turnout would have been higher and there would have been more time to assess candidates. I would have liked to see this paper cover it more. Whyy didn't they do something like interview each candidate as if it was a job interview and publish the answers?

I voted after reading the 4 candidates' statements online (wasn't that tricky to find) but until I got my slip, I hadn't heard anything about it being a 1st and 2nd choice system - bet there are more spoiled ballots than normal. Why wasn't the 2 crosses in 2 column explained on TV or in this paper in advance?

Like I said - it was this govt's show and they messed it up.”

“If we had a political establishment which believed in equality for all candidates, then there would be a better voting turnout. It's not like that so the public think what's the point of voting because nothing can or will change.

“I did vote but after having used the internet to search for the correct website and find the candidates for my area, and read their manifestos an hour before going the polling station.
Not one person that I have spoken to regarding the election had received any information of any description through the post/ seen any posters etc. ZILCH.
How they expect people to turn up to vote when completely uninformed is a mystery!”

“Just goes to show the interest of the people in these "made up" jobs”
