VIDEO: Updated 7.50pm All lanes reopened on M1 after pile-up

TRAFFIC across Derby has started to clear following a serious three-vehicle smash. 

St Alkmund's Way, the A52, Raynesway and the A6 bypass in Alvaston remain busy after cars were diverted into the city due to the accident on the M1.

The A52 is now beginning to move more smoothly, though things are still busy exiting the Pentagon island onto Sir Frank Whittle Way.

The M1 is still busy, with long queues stretch northbound from junction 23A to junction 25, after

the road was closed earlier this evening.

But police have said all lanes are now reopen and traffic is starting to move.

The accident happened just before noon and involved two lorries and a car, police said.

One of the lorry drivers has been taken to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre with serious injuries.

The other two drivers are thought to have minor injuries.

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire police said: "The road is expected to be closed for a number of hours and motorists are asked to avoid the area."

Firefighters from Long Eaton, Nottingham Road, Alfreton and Nottinghamshire attended the incident and remain on scene.

A fire service spokesman said: "Crews were called to attend a road traffic collision involing an HGV, a saloon car and a van shortly before noon.

"One person was trapped by his injuries and had to be cut free from his vehicle.

"The air ambulance attended and fire crews stabilised the lorry with specialist equipment.

"All casualties were left in the care of paramedics and an environment unit came to deal with diesel spillage."

Other routes in Derbyshire are also said to be affected by the hold-up, including the A52, A38 and A61.
