EURO MP Glenis Willmott has been recognised for her work raising awareness of cervical cancer.

She is to receive a Pearl of Wisdom Award, given by the European Cervical Cancer Association, for her work, in particular as co-chairman of the European Parliament's Cervical Cancer Prevention Group.

Since she became an East Midlands MEP in 2006, Mrs Willmott has taken up the issue with European and Westminster decision-makers, while also supporting organisations such as Jo's Trust, a cervical cancer awareness charity in Northamptonshire.

She said: "I am, naturally, extremely proud to accept this award.

"In doing so, I do want to pay credit to the many other people who have campaigned in their own way at all levels.

"It's important we continue to campaign to raise awareness and to encourage early screening, as well as the widest possible application of the newly available vaccine.

"Far too many women have died as a result of cervical cancer, yet it is a disease which we now largely have the ability to prevent."

The award will be presented at a dinner in Brussels on Tuesday.
