MP wants fuel price rise plan scrapped
DERBY North MP Chris Williamson has called on Chancellor George Osborne to scrap the 3p-a-litre fuel duty rise planned for January.
Mr Osborne is due to deliver his Autumn Statement on Wednesday and there has been speculation the Chancellor will postpone the increase in the price of petrol.

Mr Williamson said it needed to be axed to "help people on low and middle incomes", as well as businesses and the economy.
He said: "The cost of living is rising and economic recovery is fragile. People in Derby are really feeling the squeeze from the Government's VAT rise – which has added 3p to the price of a litre of petrol – and deep cuts to things like tax credits.

"So, delaying January's fuel duty rise, at least until April, would provide some much-needed financial relief."

“The "fuel escalator" wasa one of Gordon Browns stealth taxes dressed up as a "green tax". To date his "escalator" has added almost £1 a litre in real terms to a gallon of petrol over and above the rate of inflation.
It's time this government reversed Browns theiving stealth taxes and got Britain moving again.”

“Nice of a Labour politician to ask for a rise to be deferred, perhaps he will ask Derby City Council to defer the council tax rise, how many other councils will be increasing council tax?One wonders how big a rise in the council tax would have been propossed had their been no threat of referendum on the rise.”

“Based on driving a mid-range efficiency vehicle, and an average 12,000 miles per year; a 3p increase in the price of a litre over a whole year amounts to a whopping £37.
That'll break the bank.”

“He didn't seem so bothered about scrapping council tax rises when he was council leader.
Typical Labour politician - anything for a cheap political point.”

“I'd like to see the headline:
MP DEMANDS INCINERATOR PLANS SCRAPPED.
But I doubt he's bothered about local issues.”
