POLICE have said they now believe a man found with head injuries under a footbridge in Ilkeston was the victim of a serious assault.

The 37-year-old local man was found unconscious in Palmerston Road at about 12.25am on Friday.

He was taken to Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre where he is still being treated.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the assault to call 0345 123 3333 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
