Legg, 23, of Market Street, South Normanton, admitted unlawful wounding and possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence on June 8. He conceded to officers that it was a prank that had gone wrong.
He said he had been shooting at things in the garden to give Mr Wainwright a shock.
Handing Legg a 12-month jail sentence, suspended for two years, Recorder Stephen Lowne said: "You could have hit his eye, have blinded him and damaged his brain."
The judge told him to pay Mr Wainwright £500 and £800 towards court costs. He must also carry out 250 hours' unpaid work and obey a three-month curfew between 9pm and 6am.

“This idiot should have gone to prison. This was anything but a prank, although he no doubt misheard someone and thought they had called him a pranker.”
