Meaning of marriage is being hijacked by new Bill

PRIME Minister David Cameron has steamrollered the first reading of the same-sex marriage Bill.

It was not wanted by the majority of people, was not in any manifesto or even the Queen's Speech, but was promoted and pushed for our own PM, showing his pomposity, arrogance and inconsideration of millions of our population. All for what? Possibly because he is doing nothing for our country – maybe he might make a name for himself by this action.

How can two people of the same sex marry when the very meaning of the word marriage is the joining together of one man to one woman? God created Adam and Eve, not two Adams or two Eves. Marriage is a wonderful and special relationship that shouldn't be abused.

The word "gay" is a corruption of its meaning. Go to your dictionaries and you'll see "merry, light-hearted and cheerful". It was a lovely word which really meant something. Now it is a word we hesitate to use.

That meaning is now disappearing from our everyday language and so will the word marriage as they have now both been hijacked by this Bill. The country will rue the day when and if this Bill becomes law. This will be the beginning of a complete demise of marriage as we have known for so long.

“@rbob123 "Or do you want to live in a world where some opinions are prescribed and others are proscribed?"

Not at all. I want to live in a world where have the freedom to express their love for each other, regardless of their gender. Unfortunately, it is the ancient diktat laid down in such publications as the bible that prevents this.

@capnpete "this does not give Why-nicknames the right to call those who wrote the bible "a bunch of homophobic misogynists."

OK, so please explain, a) why the bible denounces homosexuality and, b) where are all the female archbishops, cardinals and monsignors (or whatever the female equivalent would be)?”

“I have to agree with you caponpete. I might also suggest that Why is being a little narrow minded himself, as he seems loath to accept that the Christian is to be allowed his opinions, being different to Why's.

To attempt to answer your question Why, the Christian believes that their God is NOT ONLY a God of love, but is also a God of righteousness. As the Christian believes that God created our world, he has the right to say what is right and wrong, and it's clear in the Christian Scriptures that homosexual practice is wrong.

You may not agree with this viewpoint, but you are surely not going to prevent other people from holding this opinion? Or maybe you think you have the right to insult those who hold differing beliefs to yours?

Or do you want to live in a world where some opinions are prescribed and others are proscribed?”

“While Mr Myring's letter could be described as "narrow minded" depending on your viewpoint, this does not give Why-nicknames the right to call those who wrote the bible "a bunch of homophobic misogynists". Shame on you!”

“Apologies for the typo. The second paragraph should start 'Christians bang on about their god being a god of love but they ONLY seem capable of acknowledging a loving marriage can exist heterosexually.'”

“Mr Myring is letting his beliefs be dictated to him by a collection of stories written nigh on two thousand years ago by a bunch of homophobic misogynists. The world has changed since then and has developed different values, admittedly not all of them for the best.

Christians bang on about their god being a god of love but they seem capable of acknowledging a loving marriage can exist heterosexually. Is their god (and, in turn, them) going to be so mean as to prevent people experiencing love in a homosexual marriage? Is this a case of 'four legs good, two legs better'?

If so, it seems a tad hypocritical to me along the same lines of the number of divorced or re-married Christians there are out there even after they've stood in a church and, in the presence of their god, declared they would be married 'till death do us part'.”

“Surely it isn't necessarily narrow minded to have beliefs, Why, and to hold them strongly?

Just because we are in the 21st century doesn't mean that everything that went before is wrong and everything we do now is right!”

“Where, Mr Myring, is your proof for,

    a) the majority of people not wanting this legislation, and
    b) something you call god created Adam and Eve

Please get back to us when you eventually get your narrow mind out of the Middle Ages and into the 21st century.”
