A GAMING company is looking to open a new bingo hall in Derby after an absence of nearly two decades.

Mecca Bingo has revealed that its proposed Derby operation would create up to 50 jobs.

Following research to find locations for expansion, the company identified Derby as a preferred destination.

The club would offer live entertainment and a restaurant as well as bingo.

According to Mecca, the ideal venue has to be on a prominent A-road location, close to large residential areas, have a 30,000 sq ft flat floor space on a retail or leisure park and have a minimum of 150 parking spaces.

Mark Jones, managing director of Mecca Bingo, said: "We are actively seeking a new location in Derby as we are keen to open one of our new-look leisure venues in the area.

"Not only will it bring much-needed employment opportunities to the city but it will also offer locals a new female-friendly sociable gaming concept which is an attractive alternative to standard leisure activities such as the cinema or going to the pub.

"Our new-style clubs offer live entertainment, great tasting food which is cooked to order and the chance to take part in some fun gaming."

Mecca Bingo had a club at the former Hippodrome theatre in Green Lane, Derby, which it then sold in 1993.

Owned by Rank Group Plc, Mecca Bingo now owns 98 clubs throughout the UK as well as operating online bingo and games via iPhone and Android apps.

It has appointed property consultancy Cushman and Wakefield to launch the search for a suitable site for the new venue.

“the Market place in Allenton has already been allocated for TESCO and the New Market as soon as the road situation is sorted out, Best Buy on Raynesway would be Ideal or how about up on Forresters Park. I think the Gala Hall is still on Siddals Road”

“Admittedly the old Debehams site is good, but what about using the building that Best Buy have just vacated. There's no bingo over that side of the city and there is ample parking.”

“what about the derelict railway shed at the bottom of great northern road, that must be a prime location with great visibility for somebody to use. I often wonder why its been left to rot for so long when it has (had?) great potential”

    “The old Debenhams.
Plenty of floor space, convenient for cashpoints in walking distance, bus stops outside, loading area to pick up your winnings...... ideal, methinks.”

“Somewhere outside the city centre! There is nowhere of that size in the city that could accommodate their requirements.
Old magistrates court and Full St police station combined???”
