A DREADFUL year has come to a disappointing end for Mel Reid.

The Derbyshire golfer attempted to round off her season with a strong performance in the final Ladies' European Tour event, the Dubai Ladies' Masters, but a persistent wrist injury forced her to withdraw less than half way through.

The 25-year-old had not played on the LET since September and had been troubled by the wrist for several weeks.

Reid will finish no higher than 22nd on this season's order of merit and has plenty of ground to make up next year if she is to earn a place in the European team for the 2013 Solheim Cup.

The low point of her year, by some considerable way, was the death of her mother, Joy, in Germany in May in a road accident that also left her father injured.

Reid showed huge character to win on her return to competitive golf, in Prague a month later, and her manager, Vicky Cumming, believes that strength of character will shine through again in 2013.

"She's finished for the year now, which is quite a relief as it's not been the easiest of years," said Cumming. "I'm sure she'll rebuild and come back blazing next year."
