Metal-detecting teenager finds gun buried in Derby woods
A TEENAGER testing out a metal detector she was given for Christmas found a handgun buried in a Derby woods.
The youngster was with her parents when she discovered the weapon at Chaddesden Wood Nature Reserve.
The family, who handed the gun into officers at St Mary's Wharf Police Station, said they were "shocked and disturbed" by the find.
Yesterday, forensic officers carried out a search of the area.
They also took photographs of the scene.
The gun has now been sent away for a specialist ballistics examinations, which will determine if it has been used in any crimes.
Chief Inspector Tracey Harrison said: "The area is a popular walk for local dog owners and I would appeal for any information about the weapon or anyone seen in the area recently that may have looked suspicious or out of place.
"Our response to gun crime is strong. We will target and take positive action against those involved illegally with firearms. I want to reassure the public that we will act quickly and respond to any information we receive."
The find comes less than three weeks after gardeners cutting hedges in Tintagel Close, Normanton. discovered a gun and ammunition stashed in a bush.
