Model train plan is given green light
PLANS to build a model railway at a Derby park have been approved.
Famous Trains intends to have the attraction in a disused storeroom in Markeaton Park up and running by 2011.
The new railway will feature models of well-known trains, such as the Flying Scotsman, as well as a station with sidings, a locomotive depot and a full village with model people and a factory.
The model, which has been planned since 2006, will show how railways have developed in the 20th and 21st centuries.
Children will be able to press buttons to operate parts such as windmill blades.
Chairman and trustee Colin Boocock said: "This is the first big step. We are on course for completion in 2011.
"The next stage is to collect the £50,000 needed for the project."
Trains will be provided by the charity's enthusiasts.
The longest would have 12 coaches, measuring about 11ft, and the shortest would be models of single diesel carriages, about 11ins long
Famous Trains is currently applying for grants from organisations such as Derby CVS to cover the cost of the building work and has created a fund for people to donate to.
To donate, people can send cheques made out to Famous Trains to Pineside, Burleigh Drive, Derby, DE22 1AL.
Anyone who wishes to Gift Aid donations should call Mr Boocock on Derby 340540.
