VILLAGERS have been helping police catch speeding motorists.

The first Stanley Village community speed watch of the year helped catch nine offenders in a 30mph period.

PC Russell Crooks, of Ilkeston rural safer neighbourhood team, carried out the initiative on Station Road, along with the help of some local residents.

He said: "The community speed watch was carried out between 8.15am and 8.45am as this is when the road is at its busiest. A total of nine vehicles were recorded travelling between 35 and 43mph in a 30mph zone.

"The drivers will now be sent a warning letter advising them of the speed they were travelling which will hopefully prevent them for breaking the limit in the area again."

“So we can assume that none of the helpful 'local residents' ever exceed the speed limit. Hmmm.”

“I was caught exceeding the speed limit by a mobile camera van. I was doing 39mph in a 30mph area. I deserved to get done because I was exceeding the limit. It was my fault, no one elses.

I guess if the police had a crystal ball they could place an officer in every dark street where a crime is about to occur. Until then, maybe we should just leave them to deploy their resources and accept that they have different types of officers for different roles. Some stop speeders, some catch criminals. As this one officers was using members of the public to suppliment him, it seems like he is actually saving police resources by using willing volunteers instead of extra officers.”

“Speed Limits on various roads are set by Law, There is or are plenty of warning signs dictating the speed limits. If you choose to go above and beyond these limits you break the law and get punished. deal with it or go to specsavers. simples”

“Rofl... I remember listening, a few years ago, when a Ram FM (or was it Radio Derby) reporter, who was pointing a hairdrier at cars to see if they slowed down, when the Police went over to "have a word" live on air...

    Quality radio! ;)”

“The problem with speed limits and cameras is that they cater for idiots who can't be trusted to match their speed to the road conditions.

Sometimes, 43mph in a 30 zone is perfectly safe (especially seeing as many limits are being set too low or are unnecessary), whereas at other times, 25mph on the same stretch of road would be dangerous.

There's a time and a place for speed - this stretch of road through the village isn't it. However, the problem is that the obsession with arbitrary limits means that they're seen as the only way to improve road safety and in the meantime, driving standards and the stupidity of all types of road users only gets worse.”

“Since when did 'novel' translate into 'ridiculously ill-conceived'?

A suitable similie might be "engage brain before putting typing fingers into gear" eh?

It's like watching a mind unravel!”

“The obvious flaw in letting people drive at whatever speed they like is that they'll drive at whatever speed they like.

So how about, and this is even more novel, don't let them pick and choose which laws they think they should obey this week?

    Actually though I think you may have a point so picking up yours and painters point that drivers could do whatever speed they like if it weren't for stupid pedestrians;
If you're burgled and a door was unlocked, it's your own fault.
If you're out at night on a canal towpath and get mugged at knifepoint, it's your own fault.

    Wow! I've eradicated most crime...”

“yes what a marvelous idea but maybe we could use the money saved to educate porsche drivers (for example) some manners and consideration for other road users
The only people that actually have 'priority' on a road, are pedestrians”
