Movie stars move on to city street as Mike Leigh starts shooting
OSCAR-WINNING actor Jim Broadbent and fellow Hollywood star Imelda Staunton are due to start filming a new movie in Derby.
The stars, who play Professor Horace Slughorn and Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter series, arrived in the city yesterday with a film crew to start work on scenes from a new movie by award-winning director Mike Leigh.
A house in Stanton Street will be used as a location this week and the crew are based at a site in Harrington Street, both in Normanton.
The film, yet to be given a title, also stars Ruth Sheen, who starred in Run Fatboy Run, and David Bradley, who played Argus Filch in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
Pauline Harper, who lives in Stanton Street, will be an extra with her terrier, Rocky.
The 53-year-old housewife said: "We are going to be extras in the background and all we've been told is that it's a winter scene so I have to wear a coat and a scarf.
"They are going to film me walking out of the gate with Rocky taking him for a walk. I'm really looking forward to it and I think it's fantastic the street and the city is being used as a film set."
Another Stanton Street resident, Caroline Haywood, said she could not believe her eyes when she saw Jim Broadbent, who collected a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in Iris and also starred in Moulin Rouge and Bridget Jones' Diary.
The 48-year housewife said: "I was walking down the road with my son, Joseph, and this man was walking towards us.
"I said to Joseph 'mind out of the way' and he smiled and said 'thank you'.
"I thought to myself 'I know that face' but had to ask a friend who he was.
"When she told me his name and that he had been in the Harry Potter film it all clicked into place.
"She also told me that his was the voice for the children's TV show Rosie and Jim."
A crew member, who asked not to be named, told the Derby Telegraph that filming would run from today until Saturday.
She added: "I cannot say anything about the story, because I don't know what it is about myself.
"But it's really nice to be out of London and filming in Derby.
"Everyone has been really friendly and welcoming to us all."
Director Leigh found fame with his TV play, Abigail's Party. His 2002 film All Or Nothing was nominated for the Palme D'Or at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. His other films include Vera Drake, Secrets and Lies and Life is Sweet.
In 2008 he came to the Belper Ritz to introduce his last film, Happy-Go-Lucky, and answer questions from the audience.
The film will take 10 weeks to shoot and is financed by Focus Features International, the UK Film Council and Film4.
