A 29-YEAR-OLD donkey is to walk down the aisle of a church during a service dedicated to beloved pets.

Ashbourne Animal Welfare's celebration of animals service will take place at St Oswald's Church this Sunday from 2pm.

Animals are welcome in the church but organisers say dogs must be kept on leads and small pets placed in secure baskets. Horses and large animals must be kept in the churchyard.

Among guests at the service will be members of the Donkey Sanctuary Derbyshire Centre, who will take along Peggy.

“I was talking to a woman in her late 20s and she still remembers the year her primary school had a donkey in the Christmas church service - and the donkey wee'ed and pooed along the aisle.
So hope everyone enjoys the Muletide event”
