forensic checks: Officers in boiler suits search the house in Moore Street
The 29-year-old was captured at a house in Moore Street,
Normanton, on Tuesday for alleged offences under the Terrorism
Act 2000.
He now faces up to 28 days of questioning before police have
to charge him, release him or apply for an extension.
Officers dressed in white boiler suits and face masks have
been searching the house and are expected to continue to do so
for several days.
Two cars outside the property were taken away by police to
be examined. He was detained as part of an ongoing
investigation by Lancashire police and Greater Manchester
Counter Terrorism Unit.
Four other arrests have been made in the past fortnight as
part of an anti-terror operation.
Police sources said officers were investigating threats to
kill Prime Minister Gordon Brown and former PM Tony Blair.
It is understood no actual plot was in place but that
officers discovered a written threat on an extremist website
early this year.
News of the arrest was released yesterday morning and sent
shockwaves through the local community.
But residents, community leaders and business owners said
they had no idea who the man was other than he was Eastren
European.
However information obtained today by the Telegraph
indicates he is Kosovan.
Councillor Fareed Hussain, a member of the Derby Muslim
Forum and the city’s council, last night appealed for calm in
his local community.
He said: “The community reaction is going to be that of
surprise but, from what I know of the details, he is not known
to have any connection with the Muslim community in Derby.
“I don’t know his name, we haven’t got that far, other than
the fact that he is understood to be Kosovan. He is not Asian
or an Arab. It’s down to the community to pull together as a
result of what has happened and to work with each other to weed
out any extremists.”
A spokesman for Derby’s Bosnia and Herzegovina Community
Association said he did not know who the man was.
He said: “The city has a community from the former
Yugoslavia which includes Serbia, Croatia and Kosovo, Albania.
People came from Kosovo mainly in 2000.”
Bish Wojcik, chairman of Derby’s Eastern European Migrants
Advice Committee, said: “Derby contains people from so many
different communities, particularly people from the Eastern
European region.
“I have been asking people who I know and nobody seems to
know too much. It could be that he is a loner who didn’t
associate with anyone.”
Dr Frank Faulkner, a terrorism expert from the University of
Derby, said it maybe the man was Serbian.
He said: “It could be he had an axe to grind against the
Government for bringing about Kosovo as an independent entity.
In that region people may also be looking at the Islamic
aspect.”
A Normanton Road business owner, who did not want to be
named, said: “I heard about the threats on the Prime Minister’s
life in the national news, but to think that someone in Derby
could be involved is shocking.
“I don’t know anyone who lives in Moore Street, there are a
lot of rented houses down there, so maybe he wasn’t there long.
Who knows?”
A Moore Street resident, who asked not to be named, said: “I
do not know who lives in that house. People come and go quite
regularly, so you only ever see them once or twice.”
Margaret Beckett, the MP for Derby South, which covers
Normanton, is chairman of the House of Commons Intelligence and
Security Committee.
She said: “If the arrests turn out to be connected to
something significant, then I would be very sorry that anyone
from the city is being considered as possibly having been
involved.”
A spokesman for 10 Downing Street said he could not comment.
The Derby arrest followed an operation on August 14, when three
men, aged 21, 22 and 23, were detained.
Two were held at Manchester Airport as they were about to
board a flight to Finland. A third was arrested in Accrington,
Lancashire.
The fourth man, a 24-year-old arrested in Blackburn on
Tuesday, is believed to be a Muslim convert.
Last night, Gulfraz Nawaz, from Normanton’s Jamia Mosque, in
Rose Hill Street, said: “There is no indication that this
person used our mosque for prayer.”
