Mystery over arrest of man linked with Derby sex assaults

DETECTIVES in Derby are continuing to question a 36-year-old man in connection with a number of serious assaults.

The man was arrested following a series of sexual assaults on women in the Peartree and Normanton areas of the city.

The six victims are aged between 27 and 43-years-old.

One of the victims, a 27-year-old woman, required hospital treatment for cuts to her head and nose.

The offences took place between 10.30pm on Friday and 9am on Saturday.

A force spokesman said the women are being looked after by specially trained officers and will be offered continued support.

Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the assaults.

The man remains in police custody as is currently being questioned by officers.

Councillors for Normanton said they were unaware of the incidents.

Balbir Sandhu, who represents Normanton on Derby City Council, said: "I have heard nothing about any attacks or assaults in Normanton.

"To hear that there have been is quite shocking."

Another Normanton councillor, Jangir Khan, said: "Hearing from the Derby Telegraph about these assaults was the first I knew about them."

Early yesterday morning, police issued an appeal for information about the whereabouts of a suspect and urged the public not to approach him.

Tom Fulep, of Carron Close, Sinfin, said he noticed a strong police presence when he went out of his house at 10am yesterday.

The 50-year-old said: "We went to walk to my mother-in-law's and there were a lot of police cars around.

"In just a couple of minutes, we saw one pull out of Islay Road, another driving out of the exit to Asda and another in Grampian Way.

"I did wonder why there were so many of them in the area on a Sunday morning. It was quite a presence."

Another Sinfin resident, who lives in Moorside Crescent and asked not to be named, said: "At about 10am yesterday I saw the police helicopter flying low over Sinfin and there was a strong police presence in the area, as well.

"I saw two uniformed officers walk down the road and there were a lot of police cars around."
