Neighbour talks of carbon monoxide death
THE next-door neighbour of a man found dead from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning has said the tragedy has left the local community stunned.
Will McLean said the death of Stephen Newton had left everyone living in Brickyard, Stanley Common, feeling shocked and saddened.
The 51-year-old and his partner, who has not been named, were found unconscious in their home by friends on Tuesday.
Mr Newton was pronounced dead soon afterwards. His partner is still in hospital.
She has been told of Mr Newton's death.
Mr McLean, 45, said his home, along with others in the street, had been tested for carbon monoxide and all residents had been advised to buy alarms.
He said: "It's incredible really that, in this day and age, something like this can happen.
"They were a lovely couple. We've had a few drinks with them over the years and they came to a fireworks party we had in the street.
"I couldn't believe it when I heard he had died – it's just tragic to think if they had one of these alarms he might still be alive."
Mr McLean had been suffering from a headache for the last couple of weeks and had initially wondered if that had been caused by carbon monoxide.
But, following a visit from the gas board, the appliances in his home have been declared safe.
He said: "We just hope this raises awareness and that people make sure they get alarms for their homes."
