BULLHEAD

Michael R Roskam has created a complex drama about the organised crime racket surrounding the artificial fattening up of livestock with growth hormones.

This, it turns out, is a very dangerous business and, down on the farm, the musclebound hands have few scruples when it comes to intimidation.

The film's focus is Rust And Bone star Matthias Schoenaerts, who plays an enforcer who puts the arm on fellow country-types into taking his family's cattle at the price that they want.

But there is much more depth to his character, Jacky, than first meets the eye.

Indeed, the movie spins back two decades to find out more about him, recalling an utterly shocking incident which moulded his awkward and now violent character. Yet, he has his tender moments too.

Roskam's excellent screenplay helps add Bullhead to the list of fine thrillers which tend to come out of Scandinavia.

It is well worth seeing.
