A NEW bar with a Latin theme will be a big hit with city revellers, its owners predict.

The former Barracuda Bar, in The Strand, is undergoing a £1 million revamp to become a Revolucion De Cuba bar.

The company behind the project is Inventive Leisure, which also operates the Revolution Vodka Bar chain.

Inventive said that it was confident that the Cuban rum bar and cantina concept would prove a hit with Derby people.

General manager Robert Laub said he was excited about the project.

"We're confident that our stylish and fun Latin-inspired dining and rum experience offers something for everyone and will be well received by Derby's bar-goers and diners," he said.

"We've entirely transformed the venue with authentic Cuban-style interior, right down to the details, so that customers walking through the door are instantly transported to our glorious world of rum and Havana in its heyday."

The company is currently refurbishing the two-storey venue, which dates back to the 19th century.

Inventive said that the work would enhance the features of the original building, including its 10-metre-high ceilings.

The work, which is being carried out by contractor Sanderson, is scheduled for completion in time for a launch party which is expected to take place on November 23.

Once open, Revolucion De Cuba will serve rum-infused cocktails, as well as Cuban and Latin American-inspired food. It will also put on live music.

The venue will be open seven days a week and will feature a Havana bar with more than 50 different types of rum.

It has already secured late-night opening licences. During the week it will be open until 1am and this will be extended to 2am on Friday and Saturday nights. The bar will also be open during the day.

And it will hold specially themed nights, including Salsa Social Wednesdays, Big Swing Thursdays and Havana Good Time Sundays. Derby will be its fifth Revolucion De Cuba venue in the country – the others are in Sheffield, Manchester, Cardiff and Norwich.

The bar has launched a recruitment drive for the 50 full-time and part-time positions, which includes bartenders, waiters and waitresses.

Inventive Leisure operates 69 venues in the UK. Inventive already runs a Revolution Vodka Bar, in The Strand, which is next door to where the new Cuban bar will be.

Barracuda shut in November last year, with the loss of 16 jobs. At the time, bosses blamed a lack of trade as the reason for the closure.

    “Beaurepaire
Better make sure I try it soon if it is going to be a nine day wonder. I'm sure tho it will last longer than that. Do you prefer the 'strip lighting, nicotine stained roof' type of British pub? Oh wait, that type is mostly closed now. I think it's great that diverse pubs are opening in the city, it gives customers different choices.”

“Great, another foreign business bar/restaurant them.

It seems 'Britain' is not one anymore. Sad really.”
