Riki Wessels and Lance Klusener took Northants towards a big

total on the opening day of their LV County Championship match

at Chesterfield.

Northants were 283-3 at tea, with Wessels 75 not out and

Klusener 81 not out in an unbroken stand of 132 after they had

won the toss and batted on a flat wicket with a fast

outfield.

Rikki Clarke was left out of the Derbyshire side as head of

cricket John Morris stood by the batting line-up that performed

well when the sides met at Northampton two weeks ago.

The breakthrough Derbyshire badly needed came with the score on

70 as Rob White tried to cut a rising ball from Charl

Langeveldt that left him cramped and was caught at first slip

by Chris Rogers for 49.

The scoring rate slowed and Stephen Peters was out for 26 seven

overs later as Wayne White had him caught behind by Jamie Pipe

off the third ball of his spell.

David Sales was unfortunate to be trapped lbw by a ball that

kept low off Langeveldt for 34 but that was the last of the

wickets before tea as dropped chances proved costly.
