TESCO has also announced plans to build a new store in Sandiacre as part of a canalside redevelopment.

The firm wants to build a supermarket half the size of the one in Long Eaton on land off Station Road.

It also wants to build eight two-storey retail units and offices for other companies to use behind the Lidl shop in the town.

The plans, which went on show at a public exhibition last week, would create between 200 and 250 jobs.

Meanwhile, a planning application for a Tesco superstore in Derwent Street, Belper, has yet to be submitted.

The firm, which says it would create 400 jobs, first expressed an interest in building in the town in May 2007 but did not reveal its plans until July this year.

The scheme would also feature a new "sports quarter" for the town, including a new ground for Belper Town Football Club as well as a new relief road from Morrisons roundabout.

A spokesman for Tesco said: "We are still waiting for Amber Valley Borough Council to come up with its long-term plans for the area.

"I understand they have just gone out for another consultation, which is due back in mid-December.

"We will look at the results of that and consider our position."

Groups for and against the building of a Tesco in the town have been set up.
