POLL: Firefighters urge people to check smoke alarms
FIRE safety experts in Derbyshire are urging people to check their smoke alarms this month.
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service says smoke alarms can give people the few extra seconds they need to escape in a fire.

Most people do not realise smoke alarms have a ten-year life span, say firefighters.
But while the majority of homes now have alarms fitted, most people are not aware that the average alarm has a life span of ten years and then needs replacing.
Last year, nearly half of all household fires in which the smoke alarm did not give a warning were because the alarm was not close enough to detect the fire.

The service is advising people to check smoke alarms by pushing the test button, to look at the alarm's packaging to make sure it is up to date and to ensure there is at least one device on every level of their home.
Smoke alarms should be fitted on landings and hallways and in rooms which have electrical appliances.
Group manager Steve Helps said: "A smoke alarm can offer vital protection for you and your loved ones, but most people simply fit and forget – they don't know if it might be coming to the end of its life span.
"There is nothing more important than keeping our loved ones safe and secure."
