BUSY Russell Peel struck to put Ilkeston on the road to an Evo-Stik Premier League victory against old rivals Grantham last night.

Gary Ricketts added a late clincher after the visitors had made a valiant effort to save a point.

Peel drove home his first goal of the season in the 25th minute when the visitors, who had begun brightly, failed to clear a free kick.

Grantham began to pile on the pressure, which was only eased when Martin Ball charged through and fired over.

In the 48th minute, Ilkeston were indebted to Jack Watts, who was on the line to head clear an effort by Phil Watt.

There was a bigger debt of gratitude to keeper Chris Martin in the 86th minute.

He saved at the feet of the onrushing Connor Higginson and the ball broke to Alex Troke, who somehow hit the bar.

Grantham's efforts came to nothing when Ricketts turned in a low cross by James Cullingworth in the third minute of added time.
