Plans to 'simplify' Derby's recycling system

“It seems like a good idea to me a single wheelie bin is less likely to blow away in a high wing than plastic bags, but didn't I hear somewhere that the EU was against all recyclables in the same bin.

“The obvious clear benefit is it removes the issue of the bags which alot of people hate however we risk producing paper and card recyclate that is poorer quality due to the co-mingling meaning less value. I asked them to add an internal caddy for papers but they refused. At the budget consultation period of resident engagement I said convert the brown bin to be the new mixed recyclables bin if there is no turning back with the brown bin charge so no new bin would be needed - then issue a new coloured bin to those wanting to pay £40.”

According to the article: "If the proposals are approved by cabinet members next week, 240-litre bins will be distributed to households over the coming months."

This isn't adding recycling to your current blue bin, this is an extra, larger, blue bin for all the other stuff!

Using the existing brown bin would be a better, and cheaper, idea.”

“I will need a bigger recycling blue bin - adding in the extra items (paper & cardboard) would overflow it regularly.
Has it been costed out to see if putting everything (except compost) in the brown bins would be cheaper? Most people have standard size brown bins but only small blue, so blue could be compost and brown for everything else.

This would be confusing at first - but June is a few months away so we'd have time to get used to idea and surely it would save on buying new bins.

“The "SIMPLEST" thing about Derbys recycling scheme is the simpletons who run it.

So, whats going to happen to all the small blue bins we currently have - are they going to nbe "recycled" ?
Where are all these new bigger blue bins going to be stored - is the Council going to pay us for storing their bins on our land?
What red bags are being axed - Ive never seen one?
